I had Ann take me back to the PD, and I went to the locker room where I showered and cleaned myself up as best I could. There was little I could do about my clothes, but I always keep a couple of pairs of jeans and tops in my locker so I changed, threw the dirties on the locker floor and slammed the door shut on them. Some lipstick, a little foundation, and a touch of blush worked wonders on my face, or so I thought.

By the time I was done prissing and primping, it was after five. I wanted to go home, but I didn’t. I needed to talk to Janet. One, I wanted to make sure she was okay. Two, I wanted to compare notes. Following the dynamic shift in the focus of the case, I wanted to see if I could jog her memory, so I again headed to the hospital.

I didn’t go through the emergency room entrance. Instead I parked in the multi-story lot and went straight to her room on the second floor.

“Knock-knock,” I said as I entered.

“Oh wow, Kate,” she said. “What happened to you?” So much for the makeup!

“Not much. How’re you feeling?”

“Better. I can’t wait to get out of here… You look like you were hit by a truck. So what happened?”

“Geez, Janet. Thank you for the kind words.”

“Oh, oh no. I didn’t mean… I’m sorry, I just—”

“I know,” I said. “I was kidding, okay? You’re right about the truck, though, well, sort of. It’s been quite a day. Where’s Adam, by the way?”

“Doctor Joon sent him home. So tell me. What happened?”

“We found the guy who did this to you, is what happened. Well, we think it was him, but as yet there’s no proof of anything. I’m hoping you can help.”

“Oh, Lord. You arrested him, right? He’s in custody?”

“No! He got away. I was chasing him down… Hey, it’s good to see that you’re feeling better.”

“I am. In fact I’d like to get out of here, but they want to keep me for at least another day… Kate, did you really think it was necessary to put a uniform outside my door?”

“That was the Chief’s idea,” I said as I made myself comfortable on the edge of her bed and took out my mini recorder. “So, Sergeant Toliver,” I said, smiling at her, “you know the routine. Start at the beginning. Tell me what happened.”

“I’ve already told you most of it,” she said. “Adam and I were supposed to meet at that bar, Second Base, where Logan had been spotted. I hadn’t planned anything. We were just going to have a beer and get the lay of the land, maybe ask a question or two, show Logan’s photo around. I knew Ann and Miller had already covered the place, but it was a date and something to do. I’d just gotten out of the car when bam, and that’s about all I know.”

“Did you get a look at him? Did you see anything at all?”

“Aha! Yeah, it came to me earlier today.
